Use Mars 400 Ceph Storage in Edge Datacenter
Many industries view data as their most valuable resource.
However, very few of them have well explored and analyzed their data most efficiently before AI & ML becomes popular today.
For example, Utilities have plenty of sensor data but use them very little.
IoT is one of the significant contributors to the data explosion. All those sensors, at the edge, far from the data center, create exponentially growing volumes of data. This is why users should consider using Ceph storage or SUSE Enterprise Storage for their IoT data storage.
Following is a use case on Mars 200 ceph storage appliance used for Edge datacenter that collects and analyzes sensor data of energy industries in North America.
The customer collects the IoT sensor data in the natural gas plants to have local data ingestion, aggregation, and analysis in the edge data center. After a series of local data processing (via their AI & ML tool), the result and original datasets are stored in the edge data center. The application only uploads precise results back to the central datacenter.
Each edge datacenter has limited space, power, and cooling system. The customer can only locate a mini rack on each edge datacenter for computing node, network, and storage.
The key reasons that this IoT application leads to use of Ceph storage are:
(1) SCALABILITY with high availability
Sensors don't sleep. Customer needs a system that can scale out without interruption. Due to data volume from sensors stretches the system capacity very quickly, a scale-out on-demand with high availability becomes essential than ever.
(2) A storage system with unified storage protocol.
Data from different sensor types are trapped and siloed in proprietary systems. All the AI and Machine learning-driven analytics shall be able to access data directly; these data are going to be used for further decisions. It is vital to make the edge datacenter storage to be an easy and convenient cluster, which could provide the object, block, and file system in a single cluster.
(3) A software-defined storage system can start from a mini-cluster.
With Mars 200 / Mars 400 ceph cluster, the customer could start a ceph cluster (or SUSE Enterprise Storage) with three 1U ARM microservers. It is easy to deploy, 70% less power consumption, easy to scale-out, and easy to maintain, including all the fundamental factors for an edge data center requirement.
